Congratulations to our District's Top Bus Drivers!
The Cherokee County School District today celebrated the winners of the fifth annual Transportation Employee of the Year Awards, recognizing the best among our talented and dedicated team of school bus drivers. Congratulations to this year’s overall winner, Creekview Zone driver Liz Rider, who is starting her 40th school year with CCSD!
“Before the sun even rises, you have started us on a path to success,” Superintendent of Schools Mary Elizabeth Davis said in her remarks at the awards presentation, which kicked off a day of back-to-school training at River Ridge High School for all our bus drivers. “We don’t do school without you!”
The annual awards recognize an outstanding school bus driver from each Innovation Zone (high school and feeder middle and elementary schools) and one from CCSD’s team of Special Education drivers; from this group, one overall CCSD winner is selected.
Congratulations to our Zone winners: Cherokee, Ronnie Townsend (north) and Stan Dakin (south); Etowah, Chelsea Cooper; River Ridge, Tom Thorpe; Sequoyah, Melanie Rivers; Woodstock, Jenny Glasser; and Special Education, Hal Miller.
Ms. Rider, as the overall winner, received a $500 Visa gift card from Peach State Thomas Bus of Georgia. The Zone winners each received a $100 Visa gift card from the Cherokee County Educational Foundation. Credit Union of Georgia provided lunch and gifts for all our bus drivers, and the CADY school photography company donated their time to provide a professional headshot photo for every driver. Thank you to the sponsors who gave swag bag gifts for the event: Buff City Soap, Cherokee Theatre Company, Chick-fil-A Cherokee County, Cobb EMC, HOTWORX, Menchie’s Frozen Yogurt Riverstone, Nothing Bundt Cakes Woodstock, Perrotta’s Pizza, and Rock N Roll Sushi.
During her remarks, Superintendent Davis spoke to the School Board-approved increased investments in response to bus drivers’ valued insights as to how the district could further improve. Bus drivers shared these insights through focus groups and the Board-approved third-party personnel survey. This school year, bus drivers will benefit from increased pay rates, increased district investment in health benefits, safety improvements including stop-arm bus cameras and new enhanced interior bus cameras, increased district and school support for management of student behavior aboard buses, and construction of restrooms at the Twin Forks bus depot.
“We want to be the district that has contagious joy and optimism in everything we do,” Superintendent Davis said, aligning with the district’s mission to be both the highest-performing school district and the best place to work.
